"Sydney? But that's so
far away..." this was the first comment I received when I came up with the
idea to come to Sydney. Now I am here; a Turkish girl among Norwegians,
Germans, Indians and many Asians from so many different countries... This is
why I started to think about the distance! It is 9,294 miles between Istanbul
and Sydney; it takes at least 2 plane rides and 22 hours...
Why come to the all the way to the land down under? The
weather, the ocean spray, surf or better yet, surfers!, the opera house, sense
of adventure? The reason I am here is, I want to celebrate New Year’s on the
beach and UNSW - University of New South Wales, I am here to do my master’s
degree. Many Australian universities are among the top 100 worlds best
universities; UNSW is in the first 50! It gets better; it's much easier to
apply to Australian universities and you get your response within a month. As For European universities because there is a constant demand classes are
crowded, courses are more expensive, you might not find a spot in the
course/university you want. Whereas in Australia you are most welcome as an
international student.
So what will you find when you come down? Strangely little
bit of Europe but mostly America... How the city is planned, the urban
lifestyle, architecture, the weather is more similar to U.S rather than Europe
and it even smells like the U.S... I was expecting a more European style because of it's colonial past, I was surprised;
well the traffic is from the "wrong" side...
"Tell us more about the awesome weather", I almost
can hear you say... For one thing, it was snowing in Istanbul when I came to
the brilliant Sydney summer; changing seasons that harsh is tough. And the sun
is so much different the Mediterranean sun, 10 minutes in the sun and you turn
into KFC. The sun is highly dangerous you must use protection always. Oh and
the beaches! Sydney has many beaches, big, small, in the city, a little drive
away... My favourites are Manly and Bondi so far, they are the most popular I
must admit. Manly is the one where they have the surfing competitions. I
think Cyprus & France -Cannes in particular has the best Mediterranean
beaches but the part Europeans must be jealous of is that Sydney beaches are so
clean! No plastic bags in the sea or broken glass on the shore! I envy their common
sense; Australians care for the environment! As we are on the topic, I should
mention that they have been working on their "urban sustainability"
very seriously. Whereas big European cities are busy just being bored,
especially Paris; ask any Parisian.
And I probably should mention the ocean pools as well! These
pools are ideal if the weather is windy and the ocean is being rough. They are
mostly built around beaches -Bondi has one- they are filled with fresh ocean
water and they are also the best way to avoid sharks and jellyfish. I think the
best one is in Domain which you can access walking through the Royal Botanic
Gardens and it's a very nice walk...
I will try to cover Sydney in many aspects; I will share
observations and experiences so stay tuned for more on Sydney as well as best
fashion tips, latest mobile phones and everything else that could link my world
to yours...
Love and kisses -Zeps from 9,294 miles away!
PS: This one is for my non-Turkish speaking friends, you can find the Turkish version here... Thank you!
